Privacy Policy

Key Quest (“we”, “us”) is a music-learning app for iPhone and iPad. This policy explains what information the app and this website use, why, and the choices you have. We've tried to keep it short and plain.

The short version

  • Your microphone audio never leaves your device. Key Quest listens in real time to score the pitch and rhythm you play or sing. It is not recorded, stored or uploaded.
  • You don't need an account to play. The app creates an anonymous ID so your progress works. Sign in with Apple is optional.
  • We don't sell your data and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
  • Your progress lives on your device by default. If you sign in with Apple, eligible subscribers can also back it up to Firebase for restore on another device.

1. Information the app uses

Microphone

When you play or sing, the app analyzes the sound on your device to detect pitch and note timing. Audio is processed live and discarded. We never record it, save it or send it anywhere. You can turn microphone access off at any time in iOS Settings. Early levels work with the on-screen tap pad instead.

Progress and preferences

Your level, song progress, scores, XP, streaks, achievements, vocal range or instrument, daily goal and reminder time are stored on your device, including for the Key Quest widgets.

Anonymous app ID and optional Sign in with Apple

The app creates an anonymous identifier with Google Firebase Authentication so features like subscriptions and saving your progress work without an account. If you choose Sign in with Apple, your Apple ID is linked to that identifier. Apple lets you share or hide your email address, and we only receive what you choose to share.

Usage analytics

We use Mixpanel to understand how the app is used, for example which lessons are completed and where people get stuck, so we can improve it. These events are associated with a random Mixpanel device identifier only. They do not include your Firebase user ID, your name or your email, and they are never used for advertising or cross-app tracking. Events can include whether you currently have an active subscription and, for purchase and restore events, the plan, price and currency. Automatic Mixpanel session, first-open and purchase tracking is disabled. You can turn usage analytics off at any time with Settings → Account → Privacy → Share usage data & crash reports; the app then sends no further events and starts a new random device identifier if you turn it back on.

Crash and diagnostic data

We use Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports and technical diagnostics (device model, iOS version, app version and the state of the app when it crashed) so we can fix bugs. The same Settings switch turns crash reporting off; the app then stops sending reports and deletes any that were waiting to be sent.

Purchases

Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We use RevenueCat to check whether your subscription is active. RevenueCat receives purchase receipts and an anonymous app user ID, not your payment details. We never see your card or billing information.

Game Center

If you use Apple Game Center features such as leaderboards, your Game Center name and scores are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.

Social features

Some features, such as friend codes, song voting and shared stats, store limited information in Google Cloud Firestore when you use them: a friend code, a display name you choose and summary stats like your streak. As these features roll out, they'll be clearly labeled in the app.

Notifications

Reminders (for example streak or subscription reminders) are scheduled locally on your device. You can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings.

2. This website

playkeyquest.app is hosted on Google Firebase Hosting, which processes standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver the site securely. The website has no advertising or analytics trackers and sets no cookies. The ear-training demo on the home page runs entirely in your browser. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.

Email updates. If you join our email list, your email address (and, if you tick it, that you'd like to beta test) is stored, along with where you found us (for example TikTok or Instagram, taken from the link you followed), with our email provider, Kit. We use it only to send Key Quest news, such as the launch announcement and new songs. You confirm your address before you're added, every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time. The sign-up form doesn't load any Kit scripts or cookies on this site.

3. Service providers

ProviderWhat it does for Key Quest
AppleApp Store purchases, Sign in with Apple, Game Center, notifications
Google FirebaseAnonymous sign-in, Crashlytics crash reports, Firestore for social features, website hosting
MixpanelProduct analytics (app usage events)
RevenueCatSubscription status
KitEmail list for launch and update emails (website sign-up only)

Each provider processes data on our behalf under its own terms and privacy policy. We don't sell or rent personal information to anyone.

4. How long we keep data

On-device data stays until you delete the app or use Start Over. Server-side data (the anonymous ID, optional progress backup, social data and analytics) is kept only as long as needed to run and improve Key Quest. Usage analytics have no fixed deletion date; we keep them for as long as they help us improve the app.

When you delete your account, we delete your Firebase user, your progress backup and your social data (friend code, friend links, votes, league scores and duet invites). Usage analytics are not deleted from Mixpanel, but they are cut loose from you: those events never carried your Firebase user ID, we keep no record that connects them to you, and the app replaces its random Mixpanel device identifier, so later activity on that device is not connected to the deleted account. Purchase records at RevenueCat are filed under a random anonymous ID that was never linked to your Apple sign-in or Firebase user.

5. Your choices and rights

  • Turn off microphone access, notifications or Game Center in iOS Settings.
  • Turn off usage analytics and crash reports in the app: Settings → Account → Privacy.
  • Delete the app to remove all data stored on your device.
  • Delete a linked account from Settings → Account (see section 4 for what that removes and what is kept), or ask us to access, correct or delete data linked to your anonymous ID or Apple sign-in by emailing support@playkeyquest.app.

Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California), you may have additional rights, including to object to processing or to complain to your local data protection authority.

6. Children

Key Quest is designed for a general audience of music learners. Parents and guardians who believe their child has given us personal information can contact support@playkeyquest.app and we'll delete it.

7. Security

Data sent to our providers is encrypted in transit. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

8. Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for significant changes, let you know in the app.
